World of Warcraft lost 800,000 more subscribe
World of Warcraft lost 800,000 subscribers in the last quarter, according to numbers revealed by Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime during an Activision Blizzard quarterly conference call on Tuesday. As of September 30th, the ending of ActiBlizz’s previous quarter, WoW held 10.3 million paying players. The previous quarterly result had been 11.1 million, which itself was down from a 12 million WoW Gold peak.
Morhaime explained that the bulk of the losses came from Eastern territories, including China and Korea. What’s more, expansions like Cataclysm are only yielding temporary spikes in players. Experienced players resubscribe to the game to play the expansion content but unsubscribe again as soon as they complete WoW Gold. That gave a net loss of nearly 1 million subscribers, according to reports from the call. Mists of Pandaria, a panda-ful content expansion pictured above, was announced at last month’s BlizzCon fan convention and is expected to launch next year.
Also at BlizzCon, the company also announced that it’s giving away Diablo III to players who buy a year’s subscription to WoW. Rather than pay month-to-month, a down payment of a year’s worth of subscription money will get you the WoW Annual Pass and D3 for free.
The gaming press has often looked for signs of the decline of WoW Gold. Falling subscriber numbers have been a telltale sign, but for me it’s really the Diablo III tie-in. Blizzard’s willingness to discount WoW – by just throwing in a free copy of their hugely anticipated new game – shows a certain sense of urgency coming from Irvine.
Is Bigger always Better?
To start looking at this issue you first have to understand a little about the explorer segment of players in MMOs. These are players that get a thrill out of being a modern day digital Columbus. They enjoy setting out across the digital frontier in search of a brave new land where no man has gone before… Well, maybe just the devs, but in game terms they are WoW Gold God, so don’t really count as men.
Their thrill and drive in a game is to level so that they are able to get into new areas to explore the land and find out what is in every nook and cranny. Often times pushing the edges and trying to find ways into unfinished WoW Gold areas, routes mistakenly left travelable between zones, and blank spaces into the digital either. Many of them do this to the point of getting into trouble with the game company, getting suspended or even banned in some cases.
To cater to this group several developers have created insanely large worlds. At E3 this spring I heard many upcoming MMO developers bragging about the size of their virtual worlds. A few of them claim to have worlds several orders of magnitude larger than anything done before. It left me wondering if they were compensating for WoW Gold. Other developers feel that every expansion or patch must add on significant pieces to the existing world so that players can explore new areas as they level.
Reasons to Switch Guilds
Switching guilds is a topic that many players struggle with at an emotional level or take far too casually. Your guild is your family in game which deserves respect and loyalty. Generally, guilds help each other, nurture players and help progress through the game. Most people spend more time questing, adventuring and gearing up using WoW Gold with these players than anyone else. So if they are so important, why change guilds?
Here are a few very solid reasons to change, although I still don’t recommend doing so without serious consideration. Behavioral / Political Differences – This is a big one for me, I have joined a few guilds with characters only to find out that guild chat is full of swearing, trash talking, degrading people because of where they live, religion, politics or some other crazy thing. To me, I play the game to get away from real life concerns and childish behavior, not to put up with it in yet another location. If the guild won’t address these players, then it’s time to leave.
Difference in Playtimes / Play styles – Sometimes it happens that you join a guild and it or you evolve into a different play style. You could join a guild to level and quest and then the guild decides to do mainly PvP. or you could be online from 5-9 Pacific Time and everyone else in the guild is on at 5-9 eastern, so you never see each other.
Guild Rules – Some guilds run very loose, some very tight and militaristic. If the style of the guild you’re in does not suit your style, switch. I have been in high level raiding guilds that dictate builds, gear, and playtimes to a strict degree. If it’s all about progression for you that may be ok. For faster progression, buy the best gears with WoW Gold. If you want to have some fun and choices, then it’s probably not your cup of tea.
Level differences – If you join a guild of like level players and they all zoom to 70 while you’re still at 30 and can never find a group, it may be time to switch. This happens at times, and some guilds are very cool about helping out their low level players, while in others you may as well not exist.
Size / Progression – This is the weakest of the reasons to leave, but still valid. Sometimes guilds just get stuck at a point where they will not get any further in the game. It could be due to insufficient players, different classes, or other things like WoW Gold. If you have done everything in the game to progress, and have nothing left to do without switching to a larger guild, it can be valid.
